Step into the heart of Finnish history on a guided day trip to the idyllic Hollola church village, home to the impressive medieval St. Mary’s Stone Church. This excursion uniquely combines culture, stories, and stunning nature.
We will explore the church surroundings and the cultural landscape created by the old vicarage and municipal cottage. Along the way, you will hear fascinating stories about the local giant Hollo, Iron Age artifact discoveries, and how C.L. Engel, the architect who designed Helsinki’s Senate Square, is connected to Hollola church village.
We will also climb the nearby Kapatuosia hill fort, where Stone Age people stopped over 8,000 years ago. From the Viking Age through the Middle Ages, the hill served as a refuge and defensive position. At the summit, you can climb the observation tower, which offers beautiful views over Lake Vesijärvi.
The excursion is crowned with a delicious lunch in the church village. For dessert, we will pick up ice cream from the charming village kiosk and continue on foot to visit the studio of naïve artist Asta Pulkkinen, located in a former cantor’s residence over 160 years old.
